The Notch Point camping area in the Ilbilbie area just south of Mackay is arguably the best FREE camping area in QLD.  There are grassy sites along the water on both the Eastern and Western sides of the point with fires and dogs permitted.  There are no ammenities at all and all your rubbish must be taken out.  The Eastern side is a little more blowy and looks over the open ocean however the Western side sits on the bay with the tide going out for miles.  A truly magical free camping area.
